every story needs structure. My approach to design is that of an architect. While I've never built a house of wood or stone, the premises of needing strong building materials (coding, by developers), as well as a clear and logical layout (UX design), finished off with careful consideration of surface materials and interior design (UI design) has always worked as a metaphor for me. Each person enters each building with their own story and their own goals; my job is to facilitate them getting there easily, and hopefully delight them along the way.
I'm a Portland-based full-service UX/UI designer with a background in everything from agile UX practices, to graphic design, video compositing, and hand-drawn animation. I've often worked with startups who need a wide range of design work, from ad and presentation design in their marketing department, to UX user studies, flowcharts and polished UI components in their product development.
Much of my work has focused on data visualization/analytics, and innovative interaction techniques across a wide range of formats, from tabletop touchscreens in museum installations, to mobile devices in the wilderness. |
Here you can see an overview of my design process, or you can dive into three case studies:
- The first is my most recent employer, a rising star startup, where I designed a component-based, flexible structure for a complex data analytics tool.
- The second case study is from my time working at a corporate research facility, exploring new methods of touch interaction.
- The third case study is where I worked as a designer and project manager on a Brown University team building a webapp designed for museum installation, for exploring artworks and associated interactive tours.
